Peplum Trend: The One Look Seen On Every Runway, Every Editor And Every Influencer At Fashion Week

Publish date: 2024-09-27

Fashion week is back, and with it - of course - a new trend or two to mull over. But with Milan fashion week currently in session and Paris waiting patiently in the wings, we still have a couple of weeks to go before the official key trends for spring/summer 2024 can be declared.

Impatient as ever, though, we're here to give you something of a sneak peek. And if you hate 00s fashion trends may we advise that you avert your eyes right about now…

As is always the case with these seasonal runways, while we may need to wait another six months before those looks storming down the catwalk make their way into our wardrobes, you don't need to look too far for some more immediate inspiration.

After all, those invited to these fashion shows and sitting front row are nothing if not devoted to the cause.

Serving up fresh, present-season style inspo the street style set are never short of a eyebrow-raising look or two, but amidst the eye-catching chaos there is almost always a trend emerging that can be easily incorporated in our everyday lives.

This season's accessible trend? The humble peplum.

Spotted on everyone running in and out of the industry's hottest shows over London Fashion Week, we saw editors, influencers, celebrities and even supermodels plumping for peplum. And, let's face it, if anyone's going to convince us a trend is worth trialing it's Naomi Campbell

An effortlessly cool look (is she ever anything but?), Naomi wore this full Alexander McQueen look with zip detailing splashed across the peplum to sit front row at Skepta's runway show debut for Mains on the second day of the capital's sartorial showcase.

Whether it was a jacket with the skirted hemline, a corseted strapless top, a knitted vest, a broderie blouse or even a denim blazer, wherever we found ourselves this season we were never more than a few feet away from a waist-cinching peplum top.

Of course, we all knew this was coming.

Back in February when the fashion pack was making its way around the autumn/winter 2023 showcases this trend was impossible to miss. Perhaps less so on the showgoers, but certainly on the runway.

Spotted on every AW23 catwalk from Cecilie Bahnsen and Tove to Richard Quinn, Christopher Kane, Bottega Veneta, Off-White, 16Arlington, Molly Goddard, Zimmermann, Paco Rabanne and Nina Ricci, there was no denying the ubiquitousness of the peplum.

And while many shunned the idea of the 00s staple returning, others couldn't wait to get their hands on the universally flattering fit-and-flare silhouette now that it had been given such a contemporary overhaul. True to form, it looks like the runways were right in their predictions; the peplum really is set to be the biggest trend of autumn 2023.

And for those of you with longevity in mind, it seems the look is going nowhere any time soon with this September's shows forecasting a similar aesthetic for spring/summer 2023.

From Huishan Zhang to Tove, Susan Fang, Roksanda, Bora Aksu and Eudon Choi, the peplum has already been dominating the current runways… and we're only halfway through the four fashion capitals.

So it seems whether or not you're convinced on the silhouette's return, one way or another we're going to be seeing it everywhere for the foreseeable.

We're already on board.
