Ex-Alabama running back Ahmaad Galloway passed away from overdose of fentanyl, ethanol and xylazine

The cause of death of former Alabama running back Ahmaad Galloway has been revealed, two months on from his passing. 

Galloway was found dead at age 42 in his St. Louis apartment on January 9. The city's medical examiner office confirmed to Dailymail.com his death resulted from an accidental overdose. 

According to the statement, acute fentanyl, ethanol and xylazine Intoxication were the immediate causes of death. 


Galloway had been working as an eight-grade English teacher at Compton-Drew Middle School in St. Louis. The school's principal, Susan Reid, said he was found dead during a welfare check.

'Ahmaad was always on time, very responsible,' Reid told WVTM13 following his death. 'So, we knew something might be wrong.'

Galloway, a father of two, rushed for 1,830 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Crimson Tide between 1999 and 2002 under coaches Mike Dubose and Dennis Franchione. 

He would go on to be a seventh-round pick by the Denver Broncos, but missed his rookie season due to injuries he suffered at Alabama. 

Galloway was later traded to the San Diego Chargers and also spent time in NFL Europe with the Scottish Claymores and the Frankfurt Galaxy.

His NFL career ended in 2004, but he returned to the game as a high school coach in Missouri.

'When Ahmaad arrived at Bama, he was humble, yet mature beyond his years,' former Alabama offensive lineman Griff Redmill told WCTM13. 'He was mature and very put together — I knew right away that he was a person that could be my friend for life.'

Galloway is survived by his children, Austin and Aurbey.

'Ahmaad was always quiet and humble,' Galloway's sister Kimberley Slaughter said. 'My brother loved football growing up and later loved his children Austin and Aubrey.'
